This department concentrates on the study of Islamic thought. Islamic thought is a term that refers to science of Kalam, Islamic Philosophy, and Sufism, but may also include Islamic legal philosophy. Despite the fact that the study of Islamic thought is based on classical references which are the product of Islamic intellectual tradition in the past, the department correlates the subject with contemporary issues. It means that Islamic intellectual heritages are studied within the contemporary perspective or based on the present requirement. The mission of the department is to inculcate fundamental understanding of Islam for defending Islam from theological, philosophical, ideological and cultural challenges. In addition, it is to provide basic knowledge for the students so as to enable them to be critical as well appreciative towards contemporary knowledge, to be able to modify, adapt and develop it based on Islamic concepts. So. the primary role that could be played by the graduate of this department is to re-conceptualize Islamic teaching to respond the challenges of contemporary thought by having critical attitude towards foreign thought and having selective manner in adapting various concepts that stem from other civilization.
LEARN MORE Tafsir is one of the most important subjects in Islamic studies, because of the Quranic position as the main source of knowledge in Islam. Therefore, this department is established to produce muslim intellectuals who are conversant of science of the Quran, methodology of interpretation as well as its challenge. The mastery of the science of the Quran is considerably important for explicating the position of the Quran as an authentic divine revelation, while comprehending of methodology is required to put the function of the Quran as the guidance for the resolving scientific and social problem in Islam. The curriculum of this program is constructed with the concentration of Quranic science, methodology of Tafsir and the challenge of the science of Tafsir, with some additional subjects required by the university and faculty.
