Gontor – University of Darussalam Gontor held the first ever bilingual MUN (Model United Nations) in Indonesia, 15-16 March 2020. The event was organized by International Relations Department, Faculty of Humanities with 48 delegates from universities and high-schools took part.

The theme of the assembly was “State’s Response towards the Challenges of Global Migration”. The assembly was held in Arabic and English, two out of six official languages of the United Nations.

“Gontor has been well-known for its use of English and Arabic as medium of education. This agenda supports Gontor’s commitment to promoting both languages,” said Dr Muhamamd Latief, MA, Head of International Relations Department.

He further explained that the program was aimed to hone students’ skills in using both languages in diplomacy and discussing critical global issues.

The program is part of university’s effort to establish the department as the best International Relations Department in Indonesia, Assoc Prof Dr Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi, Vice Rector I said.


Among institutions participating in this bilingual MUN were Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Surabaya, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, SMA Insan Cendikia Tangerang, and many more.

Vice Rector II, Dr Setiawan Bin Lahuri reminded that in addition to ability to speak in English and Arabic, participants also need to develop their ability to deliver their ideas in written form.
